This is my first song written for Christ in Tamil, with its first line as a refrain borrowed without shame from Barathiyar, an icon and treasure in Tamil heritage. Barathiyar's passion for justice, righteousness, freedom and love for humanity shines through his activism and literary works, such as in his poem, "Accham illai," which in English means, "No Fear." As part of my song, each verse's first line points out different ways that those who put their trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior need not fear anything in this life, or the next. Though Barathiyar was not a Christian, his noble qualities are a beautiful reflection of God's love that is both merciful yet righteous. It is this dual nature of the love of God for all of humanity that led Him to die on the cross for our sins, offering Himself as a sacrifice on our behalf, because none of our own righteous deeds, no matter how good of a person we are or try to be, have the ability to take away God's wrath and judgement for our sins. Even righteous people like Job or Bharathiyar, were not perfect, because no human being is perfect, no matter how much good they do, since we all have the propensity to sin inside of us. Only when we believe the Good News that God the Son, the sinless Jesus Christ, became flesh and died on our behalf of our sins, and rose again from the dead to defeat death, are we saved from eternal judgement and brought into marvelous, eternal life with God. No matter where we are in our faith journey, the moment we acknowledge we need to be saved from our sins, and choose to trust in Jesus Christ as our savior, He calls us God's Children, who indeed can fearlessly say in all situations, "accham illai, accham illai, accham enbathu ellaiyae." Lord Jesus, may you lead each person who reads this to your arms, where we are wrapped up in the purest form of love, and stand in holy fear and awe of your Grace and Mercy that saves us from the powers of the world, our own flesh and the enemy. Amen.
